There are a variety of methods to take a representation of the foot to make custom made orthotics. At Fitzroy Foot and Ankle Clinic we use a 3D laser scanner to take a 3D representation of your foot. This is an extremely accurate method to capture a representation of the foot. Older methods require the use of plaster or resin impregnated gauze, which is messy, and takes longer to send to the orthotic laboratory.
3D laser scanning for custom made orthotics also allows us to precisely place materials, which means our orthotics can be very effective to reduce pain, improve function, and prevent injury.
What to expect
Your podiatrist will place your foot on a scanner that uses a camera and laser to create a representation of your foot. This representation is then combined with a prescription that the podiatrist completes. The scanning only takes a minute, and only requires you to stay still for a moment.
