What are prefabricated orthotics?
Prefabricated orthotics function in a similar way to custom made orthotics, in that they can either change the forces being applied to the foot from the ground, change the way your foot moves, or change the way your muscles and tendons function.
The key differences between prefabricated and custom made orthotics are that:
no representation of the foot is used,
prefabricated orthotics are manufactured to a set design,
prefabricated orthoses are available at a lower cost than custom made orthotics.
What else do i need to know?
Because prefabricated orthotics are a generic shape they may not suit everyone. The podiatrists at Fitzroy Foot and Ankle Clinic are very experienced in biomechanical assessments and working with you and your goals to determine the best and most appropriate form of orthotic therapy.
Despite the differences to custom made orthotics, prefabricated orthotics can be as equally effective for some conditions, activities, and foot types.
For patients with private health insurance, some health funds will provide rebates for prefabricated orthotics, and we would recommend checking with your health fund.
